Bing Shopping Gets Natural Language Price Constraint Feature

Bing has announced a new natural language search feature for Bing Shopping results. With the new capabilitiy, users should be able to use words like "under $100" or "under $50" along with their keywords to get relevant results for products that match such descriptions. "With help from Microsoft Research, we've improved how we handle price queries to deliver results that automatically reflect your budget," the Bing Shopping team writes in a blog post.  "This is especially handy when you're on the go, and don’t have time to browse around and click the right refinements.  At the mall and wondering if you’re seeing a bargain? Just fire up the Bing for Mobile app on your phone and say 'sony digital camera under $120'. Voila, it’s that easy." "Under the hood, we try to detect a price constraint in your query, and intelligently adjust the results to match your criteria," the team adds. "Right now, this only works for prices, and only for US users.  This is just a small step in our journey to make search friendlier to natural language queries, and help you quickly find what you're looking for." The feature seems to work pretty well, based on the test queries I tried. Bing does appear to have a leg up on Google in this regards. Similar shopping searches on Google didn't work out quite so well. Bing recently added a new flight search suggestion feature to its search box, but that feature still appears to be in the process of rolling out. Bing's David Lindheimer reminded me via Twitter to see if it was working, and it is still not. Peter Zmijewski who is called as Innovator, investor, internet marketing guru and entrepreneur. Google Gets Cooking With Recipe View

Google has introduced a new way to help people better find recipes with a new feature called Recipe View. Recipe View allows users to narrow their search results to show only recipes, and it displays ratings, ingredients and pictures on the search results page. When searching for a recipe, a link for "Recipes" will appear in the left-hand navigation panel of the search results page. When a user clicks the link, their search results will narrow to show only recipe results. From there users can search for specific recipes, or more open-ended topics like holidays, events or a favorite chef. Recipe View features three filters: *Ingredient: Include or exclude recipes that contain a certain ingredient. *Prep time: View recipes that can be prepared in less than 15, 30, or 60 minutes. *Calories: View recipes with less than 100, 300, or 500 calories. Recipe View is built on Rich Snippet markup technology. Any recipe publisher can add markup to his website to be part of Recipe View. Recipe View is rolling out now in the U.S. and in Japan, and will be available in more countries soon. Peter Zmijewski who is called as Innovator, investor, internet marketing guru and entrepreneur. Microsoft Search Head Gets Big Promotion

Microsoft announced today that Satya Nadella has been promoted, gaining the title "President of Microsoft's Server and Tools Business." Nadella used to be a senior vice president, and was previously in charge of the Online Services Division.  That made him responsible for some very important things, as a Microsoft statement called Nadella "instrumental in leading the technical efforts for several critical milestones such as the launch of Bing, new releases of MSN, and the integration of Yahoo! across Bing and adCenter." So it's safe to assume that Microsoft remains more than pleased with how Bing's doing.  Nadella's promotion amounts to much more than a new office and title. Indeed, after spending 19 years with the company, Microsoft indicated, "Nadella will oversee the overall strategy, engineering, marketing and product development for Microsoft's server, tools and cloud platform efforts.  This includes developing the technology road map and vision to drive adoption of the company's products, tools and services, and delivering the company's next generation of cloud solutions for business customers." Nadella's replacing Bob Muglia, who should help him make the transition before leaving Microsoft this summer. He says, "I see great opportunity for Microsoft to grow the business and also lead the way in the transformation of enterprise IT.  I'm excited to work with such a high-caliber team to chart the path for our continued success today and growth in the future." More Yahoo Search BOSS Details Released

Sometime this summer, the latest version of Yahoo Search BOSS (Build Your Own Search Service) will launch, and on March 1st, Yahoo intends to provide lots more technical details.  But this morning, Yahoo shared what many developers really need to know: pricing info, along with its search advertising and branding policies. We'll go ahead and paste Yahoo's full table of pricing info below so that you can have a look at it.  It'll be pretty key in determining how everyone reacts to whatever else Yahoo has planned, after all. Here are the rest of the details the company released.  A post on the Yahoo Search Blog stated, "We encourage BOSS developers to use Yahoo! Search advertising to build a sustainable business for their applications, and those qualifying for Yahoo! Search advertising will be served ads in their BOSS API calls.  Through the Yahoo! and Microsoft Search Alliance, we believe we have a robust marketplace and search advertising platform that will meet customers' needs.  In addition, we encourage developers to experiment with other advertising formats such as display." Yahoo's hoping all that will impress developers.  If that's the case, its branding policy will then kick in and let the company put its name in front of more end users. The blog post indicated, "With the new version, we will be publishing Yahoo! branding guidelines for BOSS and will require all applications to include recognition of the Yahoo! brand.  We want you to be able to leverage the Yahoo! brand to help signify the valuable platform on which your applications are built." Google hotpot spreads to a global scale

When it comes to the world of modern technologies, Google has a thriving grasp of almost every major division. However, there are two “areas for improvement”: local, where Google’s failed Groupon bid and lack of features make it a weak competitor, and social, where the crash of Google Buzz positioned the company in the worst possible ways. However, there’s one Google feature that does a lot to establish a greater foothold in both these arenas. That service is Hotpot, and Google’s most recent addition to this information rich service is the spread of Hotpot into 38 languages and search engines around the globe. For those of you unfamiliar with Hotpot, the service is an evolution of Google Places. It adds image rich features and advanced rating systems to the local search aspect of Google. Few Google products, if any, have been released with such intensity; Google did a series of major release events in Portland, Oregon, and have followed this up with promotions across all other available channels. Several social features, including a “friends” component and business suggestions to friends rated highly, have been added since release. Further, Android phones that have Google Maps now automatically have a Hotpot widget that allows for easy local business location and rating. The recent Google announcement shows the service spreading even further than before. First, the search engine results page will now contain suggested businesses for any local searches. Second, the SERP suggestions and Hotpot itself are being spread to a global scale through translation into 38 languages. With a global scale, an even deeper focus on friends, and a strong company focus, there’s no doubt that Hotpot is one of the up-and-coming features for Google for 2011. The Daily: An e-Paper For The iPad

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp has launched The Daily, a e-paper-based daily newspaper exclusively for the iPad, and the early results are about what you’d expect:  rich, iPad-friendly content delivered with a subscription-based model. In regards to The Daily, feelings of “meh” come from the product itself.  While the newscycle is all over the launch, has anyone stopped to ask who wants this application?  Even the most basic of iPad users surely understand that news can be gathered from a multitude of places, places even the iPad can access. As indicated, the e-paper is a subscription-based product.  Users can either pay $40 a year or $.99 a week, and it will be available at iTunes.  According to the BBC, The Daily will feature articles, graphics, and video designed to work with Apple’s tablet, as Apple’s preference for HTML 5-based videos continues unabated. Perhaps the biggest news is Apple’s use of a subscription model for the iPad.  The BBC says: Apple has used the tie-up with News Corp to change the way it charges for subscriptions. It means that any publisher offering content via the iPad will have to use Apple's payment method, known as in-app purchase, which in turn means Apple will get a 30% share of the revenue made from any subscriptions. So while Rupert Murdoch’s launch gets all the publicity, Apple quietly positioned their subscription business model for their tablet to take even more developer money.  That’s right, in order to get your subscription-based content on the iPad, you have to hand over 30 percent of your profits to Apple. The honor comes from Apple allowing your content to be on the iPad, I suppose. As for The Daily, Gizmodo has some more details about what subscribers get from the e-paper: • Over 100 pages of original news, life, entertainment, opinion and sports - • Every single day of the year • Original video content • A selection of articles read aloud • 360 degree photos you can explore by swiping • Immersive photography • Interactive charts, info-graphics and clickable ‘hot spots' • The option to save articles to read later • Web-friendly versions of articles you can share via Twitter, Facebook and email • In-app comments - including audio comments • Your local weather • Your favorite sports teams' scores, news and feeds • Crossword and Sudoku puzzles Apparently, in order to save the newspaper industry, the content needs to appear on tablet-based computing devices. Bing Makes the Image Search More Interesting

Bing has introduced a new landing page style for its image search feature. Now when you go to Bing, and click on "images", you will be presented with a page that graphically displays the top 20  current image searches and images that accompany them. "The landing page assembles the top images in full fidelity so you can get a quick snap-shot of some of the most popular image searches on Bing," says the Bing Image Search team. "Once you click through to the 'images' page you will notice that we've populated the tabs with the most common search queries associated with a given image.  With one simple click, you can narrow down the images to find just what you’re looking for or be inspired to discover more." Images have always been one of Bing's strong suits, from the style of scrolling the search engine offers on image search results, which was later copied by Google, to the Bing home page, which displays a photo of the day, which was kind of also copied by Google. It will be interesting to see if Google adopts a similar strategy with its image search landing page after this. Currently, Google just has the plain page with the Google logo/search box, which resembles the search engine's classic home page. Bing's new approach is certainly more interesting. "The landing page assembles the top images in full fidelity so you can get a quick snap-shot of some of the most popular image searches on Bing," Bing explains. "Once you click through to the 'images' page you will notice that we've populated the tabs with the most common search queries associated with a given image.  With one simple click, you can narrow down the images to find just what you’re looking for or be inspired to discover more." Other recently added features to the Bing search engine include TV listings and sports ticketing information, as well as enhanced auto search results. Private Facebook Offering Closed To Americans

Often enough, products, services, and contests that originate in the U.S. are just available and/or open to American citizens.  Now, in an unusual reversal of that custom, Goldman Sachs has announced that only clients who aren't based in the U.S. will be allowed to buy shares of Facebook's private stock through the firm. Goldman Sachs maintains that this move wasn't ordered by the Securities and Exchange Commission, which is thought to have been sniffing around Facebook as of late.  Indeed, according to Aaron Lucchetti and Liz Rappaport, Goldman said the change wasn't "required or requested by any other party." Goldman also tried to make clear that it isn't trying to sidestep an ongoing investigation, telling Lucchetti and Rappaport that it "concluded the level of media attention might not be consistent with the proper completion of a U.S. private placement under U.S. law." So, for better or worse, we're just left with the fact that Goldman will give overseas investors a first shot at perhaps $1.5 billion in Facebook shares. This is sure to spark more than a few discussions.  Some onlookers are concerned laws have been skirted.  Others feel government regulations have effectively cheated American investors of a great opportunity.  Then there's the theory that Facebook's overvalued and this development will save Americans some cash. Bing annoys MSN Partners

Microsoft’s devotion to Bing is straining some of its MSN partner relationships—and has even cost the company some cash. The portal’s sales staff has been peeved for some time by Microsoft posting myriad links to Bing on the home page rather than to MSN properties, the New York Post reported. And more recently, several high-profile MSN partners are feeling shafted by Bing hogging prime real estate on the MSN home page. According to sources, Hearst’s Delish.com endured such a traffic haircut in late summer/early fall of last year that MSN executives had to a write a check for a few hundred thousand dollars just to preserve the partnership. Additionally, a pair of BermanBraun projects have also experienced a shortfall: Wonderwall, the celeb photo site, and Glo, the women’s mag launched last April in conjunction with Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S. The problem became so acute that a fired up Lloyd Braun paid a personal visit to Microsoft HQ before the holidays to try to rectify the situation. According to comScore, while Delish reached over 5 million uniques soon after launching in 2008, its audience slipped to 3.2 million unique users as recently as last April before bouncing back to 4.3 million by December. Nielsen found that Delish’s audience slid about 9 percent in 2010—while Bing’s jumped 10 percent. Glo.com also had a strong start, hitting 6.4 million uniques last June before losing 2 million users by October, per comScore. By December, Glo’s audience had returned—but only after rounds of discussions between the partners. Wonderwall, which had consistently delivered 11-12 million unique users, plummeted to 7.2 million users last November. Per Nielsen, Wonderwall’s traffic slid a total 12 percent in 2010. The drop was even more precipitous—minus 43 percent as of December—according to comScore’s panel-only data. Foursquare Launches Quest to Get More Local Businesses

Foursquare announced the expansion of its "Ambassador Program", a pilot program the company launched last year that lets users get their favorite venues signed up for the Foursquare's Specials platform. The program is designed to get more businesses on Foursquare. "It's a pretty simple idea: if you're passionate about foursquare and want to help get more Specials in your area, let us know," Foursquare's Eric Friedman tells users on the company blog. "We'll reach out to creative and excited evangelists who fill out the form, offering them a pack of foursquare Ambassador Cards to hand out to local businesses. The businesses get details about their foot traffic and loyal customers, and you and your fellow foursquare users will see more Specials at your favorite places." "If you have been looking for a way to help your favorite local business and get credit for it, this is a great way to get them started," adds Friedman. Foursquare Ambassador Program Extended Foursquare users can sign up here to become ambassadors and receive their "ambassador packs". Businesses themselves can simply claim their venue here or check out the Fousquare Merchant Community. The program should be of great benefit to both users and businesses. Foursquare can provide businesses with new ways to engage customers and get those customers to get their other friends into the store. For users in general, more businesses on Foursquare means potentially more reasons to use Foursquare - getting deals and other rewards that businesses may decide to offer. Sounds like a win-win. Android Surpasses iOS on Millennial Media

Millennial Media has released its monthly Mobile Mix report looking at the smartphone market for the month of December. For the first time, Android surpassed iOS as the largest smartphone OS on the Millennial network, with an 8% increase month-over-month and 46% impression share on the firm's network in December. iOS currently has a 32% share. According to the firm, Android ad requests grew 141% from Q3 to Q4 and since January 2010, Android has grown 3130%. When breaking down the revenue generated by apps in Q4, Android had a 55% share as opposed to 39% for Apple. Android also had a 13% increase quarter-over-quarter. Apple remained the top manufacturer on the Millennial network (as it has been for the last 15 months), and the iPhone and iPod touch made up two out of the top three of individual mobile devices. Apple ad requests grew 12% from Q3 to Q4 and since January, Apple has increased 14%. iPad requests increased 280% from Q3 to Q4. HTC came in at number 3 in the Top 15 Manufacturers with a 9% month-over-month increase. "There is a direct correlation with this increase and HTC having the highest number of devices (nine) in the Top 30 Mobile Device-Ranking including the debut of four new devices on the Millennial network: HTC Nexus One (Passion), HTC Evo, HTC Droid Incredible, and the HTC Desire," a spokesperson for Millennial Media points out. As far as carriers, Verizon experienced a 2% increase month-over-month in December. "Verizon's impression share is likely a result of the popularity of Droid devices and the carrier's ability to offer 13 of the Top 30 Mobile Devices," the spokesperson said. It will be interesting to see how much Verizon jumps for the February report, with the release of the iPhone for Verizon. Samsung maintained the number two position in the Top 15 Manufacturers for the third consecutive month. Peter Zmijewski who is called as Innovator, investor, internet marketing guru and entrepreneur. Groupon Raises $950 Million to Continue its Growth

Groupon announced that it has completed its $950 million round of financing, which has been discussed in the tech press over the last couple weeks. The company says it will use the funds to fuel global expansion, invest in technology, and provide liquidity for employees and early investors. The funding comes from Andreessen Horowitz, Battery Ventures, Greylock Partners, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Mail.ru Group, Maverick Capital, Silver Lake, and Technology Crossover Ventures. Past funding rounds were led by New Enterprise Associates, Accel Partners, and Mail.ru Group (formerly DST). "We're thrilled that Groupon has earned the confidence of some of the world's most respected investment firms," said CEO and founder Andrew Mason. "With their support, we will continue on our mission to change the way people shop locally and serve the world's local businesses." In the announcement, Groupon took the time to point to a few of it accomplishments from the past year, which include expanding into 35 countries, launching in almost 500 new markets, growing subscribers to over 50 million, saving consumers over $1.5 billion, working with 58,000 local businesses, and serving over 100,000 deals. That was 2010, but 2011 may be even brighter given this new funding. Groupon is also gearing up to advertise during the Super Bowl pre-game show next month (the big game was sold out). TV campaigns could greatly expand Groupon's brand recognition among consumers and lead the way for significantly more growth. While Groupon is battling its way into Australia against a Groupon clone that apparently took its name out from under it, there have also been complaints of misleading deals, though the company has said it is working to improve its quality control process. These would appear to be minor hiccups in a pretty impressive journey to deals domination. Competition is coming from all sides, however, and that includes from some pretty big players like Google, LivingSocial, and Facebook. All the more reason to advertise on Super Bowl Sunday. Google and Caffeine, the Latest Search Engine Update

Google has revealed its latest update to its massively popular search engine, a web indexing system that software developers and engineers call as Caffeine. When Google’s Caffeine was still under its testing phase, the Internet giant said that it has ramped up efforts in providing faster speeds, better accuracy and understandability of each search result. Martin McNulty, a search engine marketing (SEM) specialist from Traffic broker, thought of the upgrade as a direct threat to steal the limelight from Microsoft’s Bing and said, “Google have let Caffeine quietly slip out. It talked about vertical specific searches while quietly doubling the speed and starts introducing real-time results and news feeds.” “Bing was launched with a massive media budget. Trouble is, Bing presents itself as an alternative to something that users are still – for now – happy with,” he further said. Despite Microsoft’s increased marketing efforts with Bing, Google Search still dominates the search engine market. Hitwise, a leading market research firm, the market of search engines has continuously increased queries in the last few months, including Microsoft’s Bing – a combined effort with Yahoo, an upgraded Ask Jeeves and the “computational knowledge engine” Wolfram Alpha. New competitors even include Facebook, currently the biggest rival to Google’s online share and the largest online social network, which acquired FriendFeed, a highly valued real-time search engine.
