Twitter Teams Up With the NFL for Super Bowl 45

If you’re having a hard time keeping up with all the NFL/Super Bowl XLV-related tweets, a new partnership between Twitter and the NFL will alleviate these issues. A post on the official Twitter blog reveals the details, which will allow users to follow these messages in a real-time format, thanks to a surprisingly-robust page at NFL.com, featuring a map showing what the majority of NFL-related tweets are discussing, a trends tab, and a “Steelers VS Packers” page that shows which team is trending the most Naturally, this information is derived from how many times either the Packers or the Steelers are mentioned on Twitter, and if it’s anything like last year, both will be mentioned a great deal. While discussing the partnership, Twitter’s blog entry reveals: Last year, during key moments of Super Bowl XLIV, about 40% of all Tweets were related to the game. As the game ended, this number was closer to 50%. This year, one-third of the players who were in the NFL playoffs are on Twitter. And, at some points during last Sunday’s AFC and NFC championship games, virtually all trends were football-related. Considering how much more Twitter has intertwined itself into society, even since last year, it wouldn’t be a bit surprising if, on Super Bowl Sunday (February 6th), 75% of all tweets were related to the Packers/Steelers game. Other areas of interest on the NFL’s “Twitter Tracker” page include a map of United States, which shows the Twitter/Super Bowl trends in relation to their location.  Obviously, the northeast portion of the U.S. is all about Pittsburgh. There’s also a “Players” tab, which ranks the highest trending player, according to tweets. Surprisingly enough, the current leader is Nick Barnett, linebacker for the Packers.  One would expect Aaron Rodgers or Ben Roethlisberger to take that honor. Another feature allows users to follow the tweets of Super Bowl-related content as well.  This includes players, media and NFL personnel, and it’s featured on the start page on the right-hand column.  Users are also able to respond to a poll question, via their Twitter account, and their responses will be shared across this particular network. This year, keeping up with all the Super Bowl-related Twitter chatter will be exponentially easier.   Just don’t forget about watching the game, something that tends to get lost as the hype for Super Bowl event (the parties, the commercials) continues to grow. Unfortunately, the actual game itself gets relegated to an “oh yeah” status from time to time, thanks, in large part, to all the effort that goes into getting the hype machine rolling. If you’re having a hard time keeping up with all the NFL/Super Bowl XLV-related tweets, a new partnership between Twitter and the NFL will alleviate these issues.

Naturally, this information is derived from how many times either the Packers or the Steelers are mentioned on Twitter, and if it’s anything like last year, both will be mentioned a great deal.

While discussing the partnership, Twitter’s blog entry reveals:

Last year, during key moments of Super Bowl XLIV, about 40% of all Tweets were related to the game.

Bing Makes the Image Search More Interesting

Bing has introduced a new landing page style for its image search feature. Now when you go to Bing, and click on "images", you will be presented with a page that graphically displays the top 20  current image searches and images that accompany them. "The landing page assembles the top images in full fidelity so you can get a quick snap-shot of some of the most popular image searches on Bing," says the Bing Image Search team. "Once you click through to the 'images' page you will notice that we've populated the tabs with the most common search queries associated with a given image.  With one simple click, you can narrow down the images to find just what you’re looking for or be inspired to discover more." Images have always been one of Bing's strong suits, from the style of scrolling the search engine offers on image search results, which was later copied by Google, to the Bing home page, which displays a photo of the day, which was kind of also copied by Google. It will be interesting to see if Google adopts a similar strategy with its image search landing page after this. Currently, Google just has the plain page with the Google logo/search box, which resembles the search engine's classic home page. Bing's new approach is certainly more interesting. Private Facebook Offering Closed To Americans

Often enough, products, services, and contests that originate in the U.S. are just available and/or open to American citizens.  Now, in an unusual reversal of that custom, Goldman Sachs has announced that only clients who aren't based in the U.S. will be allowed to buy shares of Facebook's private stock through the firm. Goldman Sachs maintains that this move wasn't ordered by the Securities and Exchange Commission, which is thought to have been sniffing around Facebook as of late.  Indeed, according to Aaron Lucchetti and Liz Rappaport, Goldman said the change wasn't "required or requested by any other party." Goldman also tried to make clear that it isn't trying to sidestep an ongoing investigation, telling Lucchetti and Rappaport that it "concluded the level of media attention might not be consistent with the proper completion of a U.S. private placement under U.S. law." So, for better or worse, we're just left with the fact that Goldman will give overseas investors a first shot at perhaps $1.5 billion in Facebook shares. This is sure to spark more than a few discussions.  Some onlookers are concerned laws have been skirted.  Others feel government regulations have effectively cheated American investors of a great opportunity.  Then there's the theory that Facebook's overvalued and this development will save Americans some cash. Bing annoys MSN Partners

Microsoft’s devotion to Bing is straining some of its MSN partner relationships—and has even cost the company some cash. The portal’s sales staff has been peeved for some time by Microsoft posting myriad links to Bing on the home page rather than to MSN properties, the New York Post reported. And more recently, several high-profile MSN partners are feeling shafted by Bing hogging prime real estate on the MSN home page. According to sources, Hearst’s Delish.com endured such a traffic haircut in late summer/early fall of last year that MSN executives had to a write a check for a few hundred thousand dollars just to preserve the partnership. Additionally, a pair of BermanBraun projects have also experienced a shortfall: Wonderwall, the celeb photo site, and Glo, the women’s mag launched last April in conjunction with Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S. The problem became so acute that a fired up Lloyd Braun paid a personal visit to Microsoft HQ before the holidays to try to rectify the situation. According to comScore, while Delish reached over 5 million uniques soon after launching in 2008, its audience slipped to 3.2 million unique users as recently as last April before bouncing back to 4.3 million by December. Nielsen found that Delish’s audience slid about 9 percent in 2010—while Bing’s jumped 10 percent. Glo.com also had a strong start, hitting 6.4 million uniques last June before losing 2 million users by October, per comScore. By December, Glo’s audience had returned—but only after rounds of discussions between the partners. Wonderwall, which had consistently delivered 11-12 million unique users, plummeted to 7.2 million users last November. Per Nielsen, Wonderwall’s traffic slid a total 12 percent in 2010. The drop was even more precipitous—minus 43 percent as of December—according to comScore’s panel-only data. Foursquare Launches Quest to Get More Local Businesses

Foursquare announced the expansion of its "Ambassador Program", a pilot program the company launched last year that lets users get their favorite venues signed up for the Foursquare's Specials platform. The program is designed to get more businesses on Foursquare. "It's a pretty simple idea: if you're passionate about foursquare and want to help get more Specials in your area, let us know," Foursquare's Eric Friedman tells users on the company blog. "We'll reach out to creative and excited evangelists who fill out the form, offering them a pack of foursquare Ambassador Cards to hand out to local businesses. The businesses get details about their foot traffic and loyal customers, and you and your fellow foursquare users will see more Specials at your favorite places." "If you have been looking for a way to help your favorite local business and get credit for it, this is a great way to get them started," adds Friedman. Foursquare Ambassador Program Extended Foursquare users can sign up here to become ambassadors and receive their "ambassador packs". Businesses themselves can simply claim their venue here or check out the Fousquare Merchant Community. The program should be of great benefit to both users and businesses. Foursquare can provide businesses with new ways to engage customers and get those customers to get their other friends into the store. For users in general, more businesses on Foursquare means potentially more reasons to use Foursquare - getting deals and other rewards that businesses may decide to offer. Sounds like a win-win. Android Surpasses iOS on Millennial Media

Millennial Media has released its monthly Mobile Mix report looking at the smartphone market for the month of December. For the first time, Android surpassed iOS as the largest smartphone OS on the Millennial network, with an 8% increase month-over-month and 46% impression share on the firm's network in December. iOS currently has a 32% share. According to the firm, Android ad requests grew 141% from Q3 to Q4 and since January 2010, Android has grown 3130%. When breaking down the revenue generated by apps in Q4, Android had a 55% share as opposed to 39% for Apple. Android also had a 13% increase quarter-over-quarter. Apple remained the top manufacturer on the Millennial network (as it has been for the last 15 months), and the iPhone and iPod touch made up two out of the top three of individual mobile devices. Apple ad requests grew 12% from Q3 to Q4 and since January, Apple has increased 14%. iPad requests increased 280% from Q3 to Q4. HTC came in at number 3 in the Top 15 Manufacturers with a 9% month-over-month increase. "There is a direct correlation with this increase and HTC having the highest number of devices (nine) in the Top 30 Mobile Device-Ranking including the debut of four new devices on the Millennial network: HTC Nexus One (Passion), HTC Evo, HTC Droid Incredible, and the HTC Desire," a spokesperson for Millennial Media points out. As far as carriers, Verizon experienced a 2% increase month-over-month in December. "Verizon's impression share is likely a result of the popularity of Droid devices and the carrier's ability to offer 13 of the Top 30 Mobile Devices," the spokesperson said. It will be interesting to see how much Verizon jumps for the February report, with the release of the iPhone for Verizon. Groupon Raises $950 Million to Continue its Growth

Groupon announced that it has completed its $950 million round of financing, which has been discussed in the tech press over the last couple weeks. The company says it will use the funds to fuel global expansion, invest in technology, and provide liquidity for employees and early investors. The funding comes from Andreessen Horowitz, Battery Ventures, Greylock Partners, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Mail.ru Group, Maverick Capital, Silver Lake, and Technology Crossover Ventures. Past funding rounds were led by New Enterprise Associates, Accel Partners, and Mail.ru Group (formerly DST). "We're thrilled that Groupon has earned the confidence of some of the world's most respected investment firms," said CEO and founder Andrew Mason. "With their support, we will continue on our mission to change the way people shop locally and serve the world's local businesses." In the announcement, Groupon took the time to point to a few of it accomplishments from the past year, which include expanding into 35 countries, launching in almost 500 new markets, growing subscribers to over 50 million, saving consumers over $1.5 billion, working with 58,000 local businesses, and serving over 100,000 deals. That was 2010, but 2011 may be even brighter given this new funding. Groupon is also gearing up to advertise during the Super Bowl pre-game show next month (the big game was sold out). TV campaigns could greatly expand Groupon's brand recognition among consumers and lead the way for significantly more growth. While Groupon is battling its way into Australia against a Groupon clone that apparently took its name out from under it, there have also been complaints of misleading deals, though the company has said it is working to improve its quality control process. These would appear to be minor hiccups in a pretty impressive journey to deals domination. Competition is coming from all sides, however, and that includes from some pretty big players like Google, LivingSocial, and Facebook. All the more reason to advertise on Super Bowl Sunday. Google and Caffeine, the Latest Search Engine Update

Google has revealed its latest update to its massively popular search engine, a web indexing system that software developers and engineers call as Caffeine. When Google’s Caffeine was still under its testing phase, the Internet giant said that it has ramped up efforts in providing faster speeds, better accuracy and understandability of each search result. Martin McNulty, a search engine marketing (SEM) specialist from Traffic broker, thought of the upgrade as a direct threat to steal the limelight from Microsoft’s Bing and said, “Google have let Caffeine quietly slip out. It talked about vertical specific searches while quietly doubling the speed and starts introducing real-time results and news feeds.” “Bing was launched with a massive media budget. Trouble is, Bing presents itself as an alternative to something that users are still – for now – happy with,” he further said. Despite Microsoft’s increased marketing efforts with Bing, Google Search still dominates the search engine market. Hitwise, a leading market research firm, the market of search engines has continuously increased queries in the last few months, including Microsoft’s Bing – a combined effort with Yahoo, an upgraded Ask Jeeves and the “computational knowledge engine” Wolfram Alpha. New competitors even include Facebook, currently the biggest rival to Google’s online share and the largest online social network, which acquired FriendFeed, a highly valued real-time search engine. Netbooks Set To Overtake Laptops and PCs

Purchase rates for personal computers and mobile phones will decrease by 39 percent and 56 percent this year compared with last year, respectively, according to a new survey from Accenture. By contrast, buying rates of 3DTVs (three-dimensional TVs) are expected to rise 500 percent; tablet computers 160 percent; ebook readers 133 percent; and smartphones 26 percent. The survey found that only 17 percent of survey respondents plan to buy a desktop or laptop computer in 2011-- a 39 percent drop from 2010. Tracking with this trend, the survey revealed that 75 percent of U.S. survey respondents emailed each week from their PCs in 2010, down from 80 percent the year before. The research also showed that respondents are using multiple devices such as tablet PCs for activities that used to be done on traditional PCs. For example, on at least a weekly basis, 40 percent of the respondents email from a tablet PC. In addition to checking email, respondents are using tablet PCs for browsing the web, watching videos and reading books, newspapers and magazines. “The research findings raise the question as to whether, in the long run, desktop and laptop PCs in the home will be increasingly replaced by a group of newer technology alternatives such as tablet computers, netbooks, smartphones and e-book readers,” said Kumu Puri, senior executive with Accenture’s Electronics & High-Tech Practice. “If strength is measured by unit sales, the computer will remain the strong consumer technology giant for many years. Our research found that 93 percent of survey respondents own a computer—a higher proportion than any of the 19 technologies included in the survey. But if measured by growth rate, the PC market--at least for consumers--has reached a level of saturation and will continue to see diminished growth rates. There’s increasing potential for an end in sight for the relevance of the personal computer in the home as we know it today.” Peter Zmijewski who is called as Innovator, investor, internet marketing guru and entrepreneur. Chrome Ends 2010 with Market Share Of 9.98%s

Chrome Ends 2010 with Market Share Of 9.98%

Most recollections of 2010 will cover both ups and downs, or at least acknowledge that bad stuff occurred while focusing on the good.  But the Chrome Web browser enjoyed an overwhelmingly positive year, gaining market share 11 months out of 12 according to Net Applications, and the latest data indicates it ended 2010 with a share just shy of 10 percent. Indeed, according to new statistics from Net Applications, Chrome ended 2010 with a market share of 9.98 percent.  That's up from 4.63 percent in December 2009, meaning it more than doubled its user base on a year-over-year basis. Chrome also pulled off an impressive increase just between November and December, managing to boost its market share from 9.26 percent. That month's growth may or may not be sustainable, considering that one significant usage factor could have been the introduction of Google's CR-48 computers.  Also, there was the Chrome for a Cause promotion that encouraged people to help charities by using the Web browser. Still, it looks like Chrome is on a sustained upward trajectory, while its competitors aren't at all so lucky.  Internet Explorer saw its market share drop from 62.69 percent to 57.08 percent between December 2009 and December 2010, for example, and Firefox's share shrank from 24.61 percent to 22.81 percent. We'll of course be sure to continue to keep an eye on things in 2011. Peter Zmijewski who is called as Innovator, investor, internet marketing guru and entrepreneur.
